Know Everything About An Electric Gear Oil Transfer Pump

In today’s time, electric gear pumps have become popular for pumping viscous liquids. That being said, an electric gear oil transfer pump moves oil using a cyclic pumping action. This type of pump works well even during medium pressure. Similarly, in the case of high-pressure systems, the pump delivers good flow rates.

The pump suits almost all types of oil transfer applications because it is very reliable and versatile. Because of its high suction capacity, it maintains a seamless flow between two meshing gears. 

How It Works

An electric gear oil transfer pump generally uses the action of rotating cogs and gears. It is these rotating elements that develop a liquid seal with the pump casing. Thus, it creates a suction at the pump’s inlet. As a result, the oil that gets drawn into the pump gets enclosed within its rotating gears. From that point forward, it gets moved for release.

Basic Features

The pump is usually available in two versions. The first is a single phase and the second is the three-phase version. However, whatever the version is, the pump must possess two basic features.

Types Of Pumps

There exist two basic designs of an electric gear oil transfer pump that come with advanced machinery. Both of these types have an aluminium body with steel gears.

External Gear Pump – This design consists of two identical and interlocking gears that are supported by different shafts. It interlocks the oil and does not let it transfer back. Moreover, the close tolerances in between the gears allow the pump to develop a suction at the inlet. This design can utilize spur and herringbone gears. 

Internal Gear Pump – An internal gear works on a similar principle as that of the external one. However, the only difference is that the two interlocking gears come in different sizes. Also, one of the gears rotates inside the other. The larger gear has teeth that project on the inside. 


The most unique aspect of an electric gear oil transfer pump is that it is compact and has a limited number of moving parts. Most of the pumps come with relief valves to protect the downstream equipment.
