FCVs also have the potential to be refueled much faster than battery-electric vehicles. A full tank of hydrogen gas can power an FCV for 300 miles or more, while a full charge on a battery-electric vehicle can last for 150 miles or less. And while it takes hours to recharge a battery-electric vehicle, an FCV can be refueled in just a few minutes.

Finally, fuel cell electric vehicles are much quieter than gasoline-powered cars. The electric motors in FCVs produce very little noise, making them ideal for city driving.

What are the challenges of fuel cell electric vehicles?

The main challenge facing fuel cell electric vehicles is the lack of a hydrogen infrastructure. For FCVs to become widespread, there must be a network of hydrogen gas stations where drivers can easily and quickly refuel their cars. Today, there are only a handful of hydrogen stations in operation, making it difficult for drivers of FCVs to travel long distances.

Another challenge facing FCVs is cost. Fuel cell stacks are still very expensive, making FCVs much more expensive than gasoline-powered cars. However, as production volumes increase, the cost of fuel cell stacks is expected to come down, making FCVs more affordable for consumers.

Finally, some environmental groups have raised concerns about the emissions from hydrogen production. While FCVs emit no pollutants themselves, the process of producing hydrogen gas can result in emissions of greenhouse gasses. However, this problem can be alleviated by using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, to produce hydrogen gas.
